The picture above is of a horde of “Mods.” They were working class British youth in the 60’s who share a lot of similarities to today’s little culture of “Streetwear” and the “Hipster” youth in general. They would spend all of their money on fulfilling a sense of style that consisted mostly of slim cut Italian suits and sweaters, American Soul music, and the heavy customization of their scooters. If you don’t see the resemblance between what they are doing in that image 60 years ago and what is happening today you need to look again. First of all I just need to make note of the immense amount of pure unadulterated swagger in that photo. Noted.
These kids ran around spending their last dollar on clothing, music, and their scooters and than sat around discussing it with one another at parties and local hangouts. Sound familiar? Substitue some of that with spending all of your money on limited edition shoes, streetwear clothing, the latest Drake or Little Wayne (Spelled Little on purpose.) album, and discussing it on a forum and you are probably talking about your subculture. Or throw in spending all of your money at Urban Outfitters, a “vintage” thrift store, listening to at the moment unheard of bands, and than going to parties to drink Pabst Blue Ribbon and discuss all of the above with other people like yourself and your just as close to a Mod as you are to your subculture today. Funny how that all comes around isn’t it?
Anyway, go watch the movie, it’s a great one. I’ll probably post more about this at a later date, it’s a source of continual inspiration.
