Addiction

Sure, I was always curious. Who wouldn't be? But, it's not something you ever really see yourself doing, you know? A lot of people do it and they seem to be enjoying themselves so much . . . but, you see what it really does to them. You watch how it affects not only the abuser but also how it affects those around him/her. You just don't ever want to be that person.

And now . . . it's like I can't even stop. I wake up in the morning and I think long and hard about if I can sneak one in before work. In the evenings, it's all I ever seem to do. Worst yet, I find myself trying so hard to get other people hooked. I go on and on and on about it and people just give me this disgusted look. I look in the mirror, and, I don't even recognize myself anymore.

I am speaking of course with regard to BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and crossing the final nerd frontier. You know, no one ever grows up dreaming that one day they just might descend into the final fiery bolga of nerdiness. It just happens. In my case, it all started a few years ago in college. I had a roommate who was really into it and I always did so well in deterring all of his attempts in infecting me with this awful disease. And, I was clean right up until just a few short weeks ago. I decided to just give it a try, no big deal, right?

WRONG.

At first, the infection spreads slowly by drawing comparison to other, bigger sci-fi franchises. I always hate doing that. "They sound just like . . . " or "This tastes just like . . ." It's how people evaluate new things to marginalize them, thereby denying the possibility that there's something out there that's good that they don't already know about. It's what idiots and philistines do. But, I digress . . .

It's not long before you begin to get invested in the cute asian girl who looks like someone that used to sit next to you in MCB section. Then you're drawn in a little closer by all of the bigs names and little known actors that once graced the screen as a part of the BSG cast, like "Hey, is that Coach Tanaka from Glee?" or "Is that Tahmoh Penikett, former star of the also now defunct series Dollhouse?" Then you start wondering what it'd be like to have James Edward Olmos narrate your life. Before you know it, Katee Sackhoff is haunting your dreams.

What is it specifically? I wish I could tell you. Perhaps it's the intricately woven plot, or maybe all the different intellectual levels the story-telling hits you. Conceivably, you may just be able to move past the setting enough to realize that the show is one of the most captivating dramas to be aired on television in the past few decades. It might even be so simple as having three really attractive women playing Colonist Vs. Cylon.

Whatever it is, believe the hype.

Bears DOES NOT beat . . . BATTLESTAR GALACTICA.
